Chemises

If you’re looking to amp up your nightwear collection, you’re in the right place. Are you tired of wearing your old pyjamas? Want to dress it up a little bit? A chemise nightie is the perfect solution. Made with lightweight, soft fabrics that hug your natural silhouette in feminine lace or embroidered designs, they’re brilliant for adding a touch of seduction and fun to your nightwear. Or, opt for a camisole, which is a fantastic lightweight undergarment, suitable for wearing to bed or underneath your clothing.

Chemises and Camisoles

What is a Chemise?

A chemise is a style of women’s undergarment, most suited for nightwear or wearing underneath dresses. Chemises vary in style and designs, meaning that whilst the modern chemise is typically a sexy option, some are designed around providing comfort and support underneath clothing.

The term ‘chemise’ is French, meaning a man’s nightshirt.

Is a Chemise a Nightie?

Essentially, yes. A chemise is a sleeveless nightdress, with different designs varying in length, material and style. They’re typically loose-fitting, gently hugging the contours of the silhouette without being too tight. Whilst traditional nightgowns are usually long, chemises are short or mid-length.

Is a Chemise the Same as a Slip?

A chemise can also be referred to as a slip dress - the two are basically the same thing. Whilst slip dresses were traditionally worn underneath dresses, recent fashion has seen slips being used as outerwear. So, if you’re feeling brave, why not wear a chemise as part of your outfit?!

Do You Wear a Chemise to Bed?

Yes, chemises are typically worn for nightwear, but can also be worn as outerwear. It’s completely down to your preference.

How to Say Chemise

In English, chemise is pronounced as ‘shuh-meez’. It definitely sounds better with a French accent.

One of our favourite chemises is the Wacoal Embrace Lace Chemise. Coming in a variety of colourways, this stunning lace chemise features a mesh body and adjustable straps, in sizes S-XXL.

What is a Camisole?

A camisole is a sleeveless undergarment designed to be worn by women. They typically reach the waist and are made of satin, silk, cotton or nylon. The straps are usually thin, although different designs will vary in style (the most common is spaghetti straps). They can be worn as nightwear or underneath clothing to add an extra layer.

What is the Purpose of a Camisole?

A camisole is traditionally worn underneath clothing, to create a smooth layer or to add warmth. However, as fashion has evolved, camisoles are more typically worn as sexy nightwear pieces. They can be loose, tight-fitting or body-skimming.

How to Wear a Silk Camisole

Camisoles, like chemises, have made an appearance in recent fashion trends being worn as outerwear. So, depending on what look you want to go for, a silk camisole can be worn as sexy nightwear or as part of a going out look. The options are endless!

Do You Wear a Bra With a Camisole Top?

There’s no rules as to whether or not you need to wear a bra with a camisole. If you’re wearing it for nightwear, then the answer is no. However, if you’re wearing it as outerwear, depending on the size of your breasts and how confident you’re feeling, you might want to wear a bra. For the best look, wear a strapless, seamless bra underneath, as this won’t show. If you need more support, some camisoles will come with built-in bras.
